Hello! I am currently recruiting volunteers for a research study examining how cognition is impacted by a lack of visual imagery (i.e., seeing with the mind’s eye). Eligibility criteria includes English as first language, and no history of neurological damage or illness, such as a stroke. This study is investigating the cognitive strategies used when individuals lack the ability of visual imagery (i.e., seeing with the mind’s eye). Specifically, this study is examining the subjective vividness of visual imagery, 3 dominant cognitive strategies (visual imagery, visual spatial, and verbal analytical) by comparing self-reports to performance on an object memory task, a mental rotation task, and a paired word task. The study will be complete online in two different sessions. The first sessions checks elgibility and examines visual imagery vividness. The second session will include the second survey as well as the 3 tasks. All participants will have opportunity to enter into a $50 gift card raffle.
If you, Susan Pope, are not Aphantasic yourself, this will be a pointless study, rather like having a congenitally deaf person do a study on Music. It seems that you are STARTING this study with a built in bias towards thinking that Aphantasia is a disability. However, I suspect that most aphantasics do not LACK the ability of visual imagery, they simply do not use it. This can be ascertained by finding out how many of the conscious apahantasics use visual imagery when dreaming or day-dreaming; without that base-line any conclusions of your study will be meaning-less.
Instead of what you are doing you should perhaps rework the study as: “A study investigating cognitive strategies when individuals restrict their capabilities by using the ability of visual imagery (i.e., seeing with the mind’s eye)”. i.e the bias the other way around.
