How They Studied It
The study included 151 participants, divided into groups based on their imagery vividness: those with aphantasia, those with hypophantasia (very dim imagery), and a control group with typical imagery.
Participants performed two types of computer tasks:
- Implicit task: Participants were shown a color (like blue) and then had to identify the orientation of lines in a pattern. They weren't told to imagine anything, but researchers looked for "priming"—where the brain automatically links the color to a specific pattern it saw earlier.
- Explicit task: Participants were specifically asked to visualize a colored pattern before the test.
What They Found
The results showed a clear divide. People with typical imagery showed a "priming effect"—they were faster and more accurate when the pattern matched what they were thinking about (or what their brain had automatically linked to a color).
In contrast, people with aphantasia showed no priming effects in either task. Even when specifically asked to imagine a pattern, it did not speed up their reaction times. This suggests that for those with "total" aphantasia, the issue isn't just a lack of conscious "seeing," but a genuine inability of the brain to generate these sensory representations at all.
What This Might Mean
This study suggests that aphantasia is not just a "meta-cognitive" issue (where the image exists but the person isn't aware of it). Instead, it points toward a deeper difference in how the brain processes information. However, the researchers noted that people with hypophantasia (dim imagery) showed some small effects, suggesting that imagery exists on a spectrum rather than being a simple "on or off" switch for everyone.
One Interesting Detail
The researchers found that while people with aphantasia didn't show the automatic visual priming, they still performed just as well as everyone else on the basic tasks—they simply used different, non-visual mental strategies to get the job done.
