How vivid is your inner eye?

This study explores the vividness, clarity, and color of your visual mental imagery using a guided imagination task and a series of questions adapted from recent cognitive science research on mental imagery.

• Vividness: How real or lifelike your mental images appear
• Clarity: How detailed or blurry your inner images are
• Realism: Whether your mental images resemble real-life objects or appear stylized, abstract, or fantastical
• Color: Whether your mental images include color, greyscale, or unusual color schemes

Note: This survey is part of an academic research project aimed at understanding the full spectrum of visual mental imagery, including aphantasia (no imagery) and hyperphantasia (extremely vivid imagery). It is not a diagnostic tool.

Instructions: You will be asked to visualize a familiar object (an apple), then answer a series of questions about the image in your mind. Some participants will also compare their imagery to AI-generated images in a later phase of this project.

Before we begin: Please ensure you are in a distraction-free environment where you can concentrate for a few minutes. If you have any visual impairments, we ask that you not proceed with the survey, as the task is designed for individuals with typical visual experiences.
