I'm a psychiatrist, and I have aphantasia. I discovered this not long ago and the experience of finding out that something so fundamental about my own mind had been invisible to me quietly changed how I think about inner life, clinical work, and what we assume about each other. My practice, Wildwell Psychiatry, is based on Mount Desert Island, Maine, the home of Acadia National Park. I offer ongoing psychiatric care for Maine patients, but the heart of what I do for people outside Maine is therapy intensives: four concentrated days of psychodynamic work on MDI, culminating in a written clinical formulation you keep. It is immersive, unhurried, and designed for people who want to do serious work in a contained period of time. My approach is psychodynamic and attachment-based, which means I'm interested in patterns, history, and the relationship between early experience and present difficulty. For people with aphantasia specifically, I bring something most clinicians can't: I know what it's like to have your inner life described in language that was never quite built for you. I've sat with the particular strangeness of discovering that "picture this" was never metaphorical for everyone else. That experience shapes how I listen, what I ask, and how I think about the work.
