Aphantasia and Body Language

1 min readByRobert Marso
There are a lot of studies that point to the importance of body language in face to face interactions with people. I am completely aphantasic, I cannot even see or describe well what I look like, every time I look in the mirror it is a discovery.

My experience has seen this condition make it very hard when in face to face interactions with people. My body language does not flow naturally. I usually find that I position my body in a way that is most comfortable but my physicality it not in sync with whatever I am trying to communicate.

Curious if others have had a similar challenge?

I have trouble reading body language and facial expressions. I didn't think i did till i took one of those screenings that removes all the context clues i had been relying on. I'm also an Aphant with SDAM. I find it funny that I never thought about my own body language or facial expression. Most of the pictures of young me, have flat affect unless they were professionally taken, which i assume meant i had been told to smile. I think i must have learned basic or maybe inoffensive body language from all the bullies i had as a child because as an adult i don't seem to cause confusion. Or maybe that's just my perspective. I've never actually asked anyone about my body language.
