I have the same experience. Never really thought about it until now. Also i can do the thing when I'm about to fall asleep, i can see vivid (black and white) imagery, but i don't control it.. it sort of just materializes out of a bunch of moving glittering dim shapes.. kinda.. hard to explain it. I like it actually, its fun to experience.
