The Four‑Factor Imagination Scale

Explore the different dimensions of how your imagination works.

How does your imagination work?

The Four-Factor Imagination Scale (FFIS) is a validated self-report measure developed by researchers Darya L. Zabelina at the University of Arkansas and David M. Condon at the University of Oregon to assess four distinct aspects of imagination:

  • Frequency: How often you engage in imaginative thinking
  • Complexity: How detailed and intricate your imaginings are
  • Emotional Valence: The emotional tone of your imaginings
  • Directedness: How purposeful or goal-oriented your imaginings are

Note: This survey is not a diagnostic tool. It is part of a research study exploring the multifaceted nature of imagination across the spectrum of imagery experiences, including aphantasia.

Instructions: Read each statement below and select how accurately it describes you, from Very inaccurate (1) to Very accurate (6). There are no right or wrong answers—be honest.
