Amblyopia and aphantasia? Is there a link?
1 min readBykathy gerbasik
I am amblyopic, I did not know that until I was in my 30's(I am 76 now too old to have had a kindergarten eye exam. ) I also did not know that people actually got images in their heads, when someone said “picture this in your mind”. I justs checked the research site, there are no studies showing up looking at both of these phenomena. Anyone have any similar experiences? Any researchers looking into this? Just curious. Thanks.

I had amblyopia as well. Very bad vision. Also didn’t discover aphantasia until my late 60s.

My educated guess is that they are unrelated conditions. I did a bit of research and could not find a published link between the two conditions.

I wonder if there could be connection given the maleability of the brain. For amblyopic individuals, the brain will have developed pathways to deal with the different set of information that will reach their brain and still make sense of the outside world, for example regarding the use of depth cues that might not be available to amplyopics to the same level as others. Could the different pathways that aphantasia creates also be helpful to deal with some of the consequences of being amplyopic?
