Aphantasia and Dreams: how they are related?

April 10, 20211 min readByMelike 99
Dreams
I have Aphantasia but my dreams are very vivid.
Hi friends,
I'm new here and I wanted to ask you guys if there is any correlation between Aphantasia and Lucid/Vivid dreams.
I learned few days ago the concept of Aphantasia and I think on a scale of 0 to 10 I'm probably between 2-4, if I think of a rainbow i can only delineate the concept of it and sometimes I see nothing.
But on the other hand I have very vivid dreams, and sometimes, they even are lucid dreams that I can feel and live.
So do I really have Aphantasia? Does anyone else it's like this?

I dreamt as a child and then not so much moving into my adult years, I noticed as well my dreams become less colourful when I got older and then about 10 years ago around the age of 30, I stopped dreaming altogether except for a very vivid dream or several over a week or two every few years. When I close my eyes and try to "see and image" there is nothing but black and it has been this way my entire life, I thought this was Everyones experience.

From what I have read, Aphants experience different levels of dreams.  Having vivid dreams doesnt meant that you do not have Aphantasia.  It has more to do with - Can you close your eyes and visual an apple?  The majority of the people will see the apple as if they were looking at a picture.   Aphants see nothing.  We close our eyes, we see black.   Anyways, that is how it is for me and from my research, that is how it is for the majority of aphants.

Hi, It’s an interesting question. I am not completely aphantastic but my mind’s eye is very weak and mental images are fleeting. The few dreams I can remember are similarly vague. Just one or two disconnected “scenes” with no kind or storyline. I’ve never had a visually vivid dream. I never smell or taste anything in a dream. My wife can describe in detail a long series of events that took place in a dream and that has made me aware of how different my dreams are.

I dream and it seems very real! I experience sights and sounds but cannot remember ever tasting, touching or smelling anything in any dreams. My aphantasia is of all my senses too, I only think in words like in abstractions, concepts and descriptions
