In four small experiments with students and staff at a German university, people who rated their imagery as more vivid tended to report seeing faces in random visual noise when none were there. The link weakened when instructions no longer said faces would appear about half the time, and vanished with more uniform noise. In noisier displays, people less sure about real faces also made more false sightings. The results are correlations, and no one in the samples reported a lack of imagery.

The Four-Factor Imagination Scale (FFIS) identifies frequency, complexity, emotional valence, and directedness as distinct dimensions of imagination. This suggests imagination is a multi-faceted construct rather than just a measure of mental imagery.
