What This Study Is About
Researchers wanted to know if people who report having vivid mental imagery—the ability to "see" pictures in their mind—are better at remembering details from photographs than those with dim or no mental imagery.
How They Studied It
The researcher conducted three experiments involving university students and teenagers. Participants first completed the Vividness of Visual Imagery Questionnaire (VVIQ), which asks people to rate the clarity of their mental images on a scale from 1 (perfectly clear) to 5 (no image at all).
Based on these scores, participants were divided into "good visualizers" and "poor visualizers." They were shown color photographs of scenes or groups of objects for 20 seconds. After a short delay where they performed a counting task to prevent simple verbal rehearsal, they were asked multiple-choice questions about specific details, such as the time on a clock or the position of an object.
What They Found
In all three experiments, "good visualizers" (those who reported vivid imagery) were significantly more accurate at recalling details than "poor visualizers." For example, in the first experiment, vivid imagers averaged about 3.17 correct answers out of 5, while poor imagers averaged 2.85. The study also found that females generally recalled more details than males in the first two experiments.
What This Might Mean
These results suggest that mental imagery plays a functional role in memory. If someone can create a vivid "mental photograph" of what they just saw, they may be able to "look" at that image later to retrieve specific details. While this suggests a strong link between imagery and memory, it does not mean that people with poor imagery (including those with aphantasia) cannot remember things; rather, they may use different strategies or be slightly less precise on tasks specifically designed to test visual detail.
One Interesting Detail
To make sure participants weren't just repeating the names of objects to themselves, the researchers made them count backward by threes (e.g., 794, 791, 788) while trying to keep the picture in their mind. Even with this distraction, the vivid imagers still performed better.
