Memory Problems is its Aphantasia
To start I want to mention that I have absolutely no imagination. Instead what I have noticed is that my entire mind works like a relational database. As an example for food I can’t remember what food tastes like but I remember that I like X more than Y. This extends further into my memory […]
My complete Aphantasia and the questions I’ve always had
Hello! I Milo I’m a recent high school graduate from Rogers Arkansas and I’ve only pretty recently figured out that aphantasia is not the norm and how diverse I truly am. I was 17 when I accidentally discovered what aphantasia is and that I deal with complete and total aphantasia The only way […]
Aphantasia and intelligence
Has there been any research done on Aphantasia and intelligence? I have dxes of ASD & schizophrenia . My verbal ability outstrips my non-verbal ability by a significant amount. A test at Cognifit revealed the following weaknesses- planning, visual short term memory,non-verbal memory & spatial perception.
Use of visualisation
I have been aware for some time about this phenomenon, in a peripheral way – and then was drawn here by the very excellent article by Carl Zimmer (https://www.nytimes.com/2021/06/08/science/minds-eye-mental-pictures-psychology.html), which provided a link to the site. I’ve done the test, and joined and donated, and…I seem to be phantasic verging on hyper-phantasic! I have always […]
Mental Images: why I can’t spell, but can do do math very well.
I have been tutoring high school students in science and math for 45 years. A couple of years ago I stumbled on an fascinating discovery: discussing with a student who was struggling with math, we for some reason talked about whether she could “see” the math problem, the steps that needed to be done. She […]
Do you think in words?
I’m an engineer/scientist, and I have always been driven to try to understand how things work, and to use that understanding to solve real-world problems. I build mental models of almost everything that I work on, they are often spatial models, but they don’t involve visual images. Frequently the models involve equations, but again in […]
Near death experiences
I was just wondering if there has been any research about near death experiences of people with aphantasia. A common, though not universal, feature of such an experience is having one’s life flash before your eyes. The Review. My understanding is that it is a heavily visual experience. I wonder if apantasiacs have this experience […]
Working with a person with Aphantasia
Hi. I’m a licensed marriage and family therapist working with a 18yo client who has this, and came to therapy for anxiety, some of which seems related and some not. One of the things he is experiencing some fears around driving because he can’t picture a map in his mind. I can see I’m going […]
Mind blown
I remember about a year ago, I came across of Youtube video pertaining to aphantasia. I immediately that to myself, wow, this explains a lot. I came to the realization that I had never been able to visualize anything, only “think” what I was trying to visualize. Tell me to visualize a pear, not a […]
Thinking: Visual vs Abstract vs Verbal vs Logic vs Connective vs Kinesthetic etc.
I’ve been surprised so much watching a clip about “aphantasia” saying “your mind is blind” just because a picture does not pop up in your mind when you think of something. I’ve always considered myself a visual thinker. Most of my thoughts are in “visual” form, or at least non-verbal form. I can imagine any […]
